The final of the John Syer Grand Prix saw Su Ragazzi take on City of Edinburgh in Dundee University on Sunday 9th February.
The storm force winds howled, the rain was horizontal at times, and City of Edinburgh won 3 sets to zero.
Yes, it was a major surprise because the team from Glasgow had won the previous three matches played between the two teams. Edinburgh Coach, Danny Traylor, will point out that in the Grand Prix Final, he had access to all of his top players for the first time this season – fair comment.
Still, the Suettes have rampaged through the Premier Division this season, amassing a total of 16 consecutive wins. It's little wonder that they expected good things from the match that would result in the winners collecting the season's first piece of silverware... but it was not to be.
The Edinburgh team won the first set 25-17, the Glasgow side hardly got started. The second set also went to the side from the East of Scotland 25-18 and again their opponents were sluggish in the extreme. Set three followed the same pattern until the score was 13-11 and finally Su Ragazzi appeared.
The score went point for point, with both teams playing well, but the Edinburgh side had the advantage of being 2 sets to zero up and saw out the match with a 29-27 win.
Hard to take... yes! The better side on the day won... yes! The Su Ragazzi players were frustrated and angered by their performance... yes! They are looking forward to the next time they will play Edinburgh, which will be in two weeks' time in the quarter-final of the Scottish Cup... bring it on!
