On Saturday 1st February the Fabulous Suettes travelled to Prestwick to play Vince Krawczyk's Caledonia West in the last of the regular season League fixtures. Fresh from the triumph of the Scottish Cup success against Volleyball Aberdeen, the Suettes were looking forward to the match.
Chatting with VK before it, he said he did not expect a lot from his team in the encounter. He was missing key players, their match preparations since the Christmas Break had been fragmented, he had brought in some juniors to fill the ranks and give them some experience of playing at a higher level... yeah, yeah, yeah!
It was one of VK's teams so of course they would compete!
They served tough, and we served tougher. They defended like demons and we matched them. They hit with power and tactics, and we hit harder. It was as competitive as any match has been all season, and the Suettes won it 3 sets to 1.
Claire Ramage was a hitting machine. Carly Murray had her most effective game for some time. Sam Fowler thundered her first tempo hits and demonstrated her improving service. Meghan McGivern looked at ease as she established her ability to play at the elite level.
All in all it was a very good match, with great plays from competitive players, and a healthy score line for the Suettes – 25-16, 25-7, 23-25, 25-21.
Next week sees the final of the John Syer Grand Prix. This is the first silverware of the season. The match V Cale West was terrific preparation for the final – roll on Sunday!
